With races in Florida and California, many runners fly from across the United States (and even around the world) to participate in a runDisney event! However, flying adds extra concerns when it comes to packing and preparation. Here are some tips to help make the process even easier!
Prepare for delays. When choosing your flights, always prepare for delays – especially in the winter months! It is better to arrive a day or two before your race than to miss picking up your race bib or the race entirely. Choose flights that will give you plenty of buffer room for your arrival and even try for nonstop flights when possible.
Put your running gear in your carry on. Unfortunately, airlines mistakes happen. Finding out your running shoes and gear are in Alaska would not be good news when your race is in Florida. Put your most important gear in your carry on to ensure they get to your destination with you. Yes, you can always buy merchandise at the Expo but try to be as pro-active as possible!
Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. The recycled air and long flight times mean your body can dehydrate even faster on flights. Make sure that you are staying hydrated by drinking lots of water before and during your flight. Remember, you can’t bring liquids through security – so bring an empty water bottle to fill after security, or purchase water before boarding. And keep hydrated after the flight too!
Wear compression socks. During any flight, it can be cramped quarters. During longer flights, it’s even worse. This means that there can be an increased risk for blood clots or similar issues. Therefore, compression socks are highly recommended during the flight. It’s also a great idea to keep your legs fresh and ready to go for your upcoming race!
Make a list. Most runners will plan to spend time in the parks too! Therefore, you will have plenty of items to pack for both race day and park touring days. A good packing list will reduce the chances of forgetting something (and paying for the overpriced version of it at the resort). Also, don’t forget recovery items like a foam roller or Biofreeze! Using these tips, you can (hopefully) sit back, relax and enjoy the flight before you embark on your magical miles!
