The 2013 Happiest Race on Earth is in the books!
For 2013, the Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend included hot and humid weather, an inaugural 10K race, the Dumbo Double Dare and a LOT of smiles! We followed along through social media as our runDisney friends kept the world up-to-date on the magic that occurred. Take a look!
Friday, August 30
The morning began bright and early as 50 lucky runners enjoyed the runDisney meet up! These meet ups are highly coveted as fans
watch stalk the Disney Parks Blog to RSVP crazy fast. The 2013 Disneyland Half Marathon Meet Up did not disappoint! Throughout the event, many participants shared every moment via #DisneylandHalfMeetUp on Twitter. We followed along eagerly as the participants ran through Disneyland and Disney California Adventure and listened to Jeff Galloway, Tara Gidus, Sean Astin, Joey Fatone and Ali Vincent. They even unveiled new runDisney medals!
After the meet up, many runners headed to the Health & Fitness Expo. The lines were insanely long as Disneyland has officially caught up with Walt Disney World when it comes to getting to the Expo early. We watched as runners got their race bibs, race shirts, visited vendors and attempted to get the extremely popular runDisney merchandise. So popular, that lines to check out were hours long – they even had to shut down the store for awhile! We hope that the lines and runDisney merchandise are something that runDisney addresses in the future, as many stated the Expo was a madhouse and far from magical at times.
Saturday, August 31
The races were off and running early Saturday morning! Beginning with the Family Fun Run 5K, families came together to participate in this fun run through the parks!
Immediately after the 5K, the inaugural 10K took off! This race was extremely unique in that the majority of the race was in the parks! Smiles were everywhere as runners explored the parks, took photos with characters and over 5000 completed the first part of the Dumbo Double Dare challenge. We did learn that the water stops were not as plentiful as they are for the longer races and no Powerade was offered. Again, we hope that this is something runDisney addresses before the next 10K in January.
The Expo continued after the races, and with less crowds (from what we heard). However the most adorable part of the weekend began – the Kids Races! Kids from toddlers to 8 years in age were able to participate in the magic as they ran through Downtown Disney!
Many participants explored the parks with their new medals, then it was off to bed for the main event!
Sunday, September 1
Bright and early on Sunday, over 15000 runners were a part of the Disneyland Half Marathon! This race took the participants through California Adventure, Disneyland Park, Angel Stadium and throughout the streets of Anaheim! The heat and humidity was high, but the smiles were plentiful!
At the end of the race, runners took plenty of photos with their new medals – including the Disneyland Half Marathon, Dumbo Double Dare and even Coast to Coast! Then it was off to the parks to enjoy the rest of their day.
The magic continues as many of our runDisney friends recapped their experiences through blog posts – take a look!
