Ways to Support Your Runner during a runDisney Race

01/9/2017

runDisney races wouldn’t be the same if it weren’t for the amazing spectators and volunteers! As a spectator, you may be wondering how best to support your runner during a race. Below are a few ideas!

Supporting your Runner during a runDisney Race

Offer encouragement. This is hands down the most important task of a spectator! While it may seem insane to you that they are running miles and miles for fun, being a source of encouragement is what the runners need most. If you happen to see them during a tough moment, give them a hug and remind them of why they are running the race. If they need help down the stairs after the race, offer a helping hand. All runners know how important their friends and family are!

Bring items they may request. Another name for a spectator is a sherpa, so pack accordingly! Your runner may have specific items they would like you to bring along, just in case. Items may include extra fuel, fresh socks, a hat, a towel, face wipes, deodorant, first aid kit, sandals, sunscreen, change of clothes – the list goes on and on. Be sure to bring along a bag (or backpack) that will be easy to carry and wear it with pride!

Hand out candy or other snacks. During the longer races, this is even more essential. While gels are offered during a race, most runners won’t turn down a licorice stick, handful of pretzels, or any other snack you may offer on the course! It’s a great way to interact with the runners – just be sure to set some aside for your runner too!

Don’t forget the camera. Not only are spectators the sherpas, they often are the photographers too! With the recent change in PhotoPass photographers on the course, the race photos have become better (and more affordable). However, runners also appreciate when their cheering crew take photos as well. Bring along your phone or camera, and be sure to snap a few photos throughout the race.

Cheer loudly and give as many high fives as possible. One of the reasons that runners love spectators so much is the boost of energy they get when running through a crowd of cheers! Bring along a cowbell, make a sign, and cheer for every runner that goes by. (Of course, cheer for your runner the loudest!) A great way to get the little ones involved is by offering high fives to the runners that pass by.
